Jackie was a teacher with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation where she taught at several different schools before retiring, after 20 years, from Washington Middle School where she herself had attended as a child. Jackie was also a graduate of Bosse High School, the University of Evansville, and she earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University. She was dedicated to making her students successful, and in 1996 received the Reading Teacher of the Year Award.
After retirement, Jackie was a member of the St. Mary’s Medical Center Auxiliary where she volunteered for over 10 years. She was an involved member of the Evansville Teacher’s Association where she served on the Board for a few years. She was also very active in the Junior League of Evansville where she chaired one of their signature projects, the Evansville Historic Preservation Society. She was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ. Jackie enjoyed all sports and still holds the record in the 100 yard dash at Washington Middle School. She also enjoyed gardening and music. Most of all, she loved her family and friends and more than anything treasured her family’s annual trip to Lake Michigan.
Jackie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert D. Coleman; daughter, Heather Coleman of Chicago, IL; son, Rod (Jen) Coleman of Midland, MI; grandchildren, Max, Alex and Elizabeth; brother, Alan “Skip” (Bonnie) Smith of Sun River, OR.
Memorial services were held 6:00 PM Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Joe Schulte. Friends visited Saturday from 3:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.
