Leo graduated from Memorial High School in 1951 and from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas in 1955. He then received his Master’s Degree from the University of Evansville. In 1952, Leo began his long teaching career as a member of the Holy Cross Teaching Brothers, where he taught in elementary and boy’s schools in the United States. He also taught for eight years in Bangladesh (East Pakistan), which was a life-changing experience.
In 1964, Leo began teaching at St. Clement School in Boonville, where he met his wife, Marilyn. He then taught at Magister Noster Latin School, a seminary for boys, from 1965-1969. 1969 marked the beginning of 28 years at Memorial High School, where he taught Sociology and Economics, while also initiating an Anthropology program at the request of Brother James Bluma, CSC.
Four wise, insightful giants shaped Leo’s philosophy of life and death: Carl Sagan, Mary Leakey, Robert Frost, and Joseph Campbell. For Leo, all of life was an adventure, whether he took a trip into town and spent the afternoon at the library or flew off to Nairobi to meet one of his icons, Mary Leakey. Trips to Germany and Italy with children and grandchildren will always be treasured.
He was a passionate teacher who loved to share ideas anytime, anywhere, curious through his final days.
Leo was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Rosemary, Joseph, and Frederick Schultheis and Mildred Helfrich.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Habig Schultheis; son, Joab and Jenn Schultheis, and daughter Lea and Benjamin Unfried; grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Peyton, Lillian, Cecilia, William, Greydon, Sabina, Rosemary, Hope, and Grace; and, brothers and sisters, Lawrence and Edward Schultheis, Margaret Schnur, and Louise Spahn.
