

She spent much of her life working with children, having taught 49 years in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. She taught at Delaware, Howard Roosa and spent the last 25 years at Dexter Kindergarten. She kept in touch with many students and delighted in reminiscing of the good times she had with them. She was always thrilled to learn of the progress that many of the “little folks” were making with their lives. She spent eight years as a Summer City Playground Director, four years at Columbia School and four years at Delaware.
Lois graduated from Central High School in 1930 and received a BA Degree from the University of Evansville and an MS in Education from Indiana University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the National Education Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Opti Mrs. Club, Beta Beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Sorority, a charter member of Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an Honorary Teachers’ Sorority, Chi Omega Sorority, Evansville Kennel Club, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and in March 2007, Lois was honored and received the Diamond Jewel for being a 75 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 87. Her favorite hobbies were writing poetry, needlework and watching sports. Lois also enjoyed buying Lottery tickets and, with the help of her dog, Sadie, was a winning contestant on Hoosier Millionaire.
She was a wonderful storyteller and keeper of family history. She delighted in recalling events from the past, like crossing the Ohio River by ferry to visit relatives in Tennessee, and sharing humorous tales from her classroom days.
Lois was preceded in death by her first husband of 42 years, Marvin J. Rust; her second husband of 13 years, Paul L. Jennings; parents, Lyda and James Howington; and brother, James W. Howington.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Becker; nephew, Robert M. (Betsy) Becker; niece, Beth Ann (Daryl) Mottley; nephew, Michael (Marsha) Howington; niece, Jean Ann Raley; great-nephews, Bo (Lainie) Becker, Dr. Todd (Ida) Becker, Dr. Douglas (Elizabeth) Mottley, John (Kira) Becker, David Mottley, Daniel Mottley and Heath Howington; great-nieces, Sarah Mottley, Katie Becker, Robin (Jim) Crinklaw and Angela (Darren) Halbig; sister-in-law, Vera Howington; and step-daughters, Connie Ayers of New Albany, IN and Kathy Pate of Charleston, NC.
Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, March 23, 2012, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Kevin Fleming, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
