Thomas Scott Austin, 67 of Evansville, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 surrounded by those who loved him. Tom was born on June 4, 1958 in Evansville, Indiana to James “Red” and Peggy Austin.
He graduated from Memorial High School in1976 and Murray State University in 1980 with a degree in Marketing and Business. Tom loved sports, and from his days at Holy Spirit grade school to his days at Memorial where he played baseball and wrestled, he was always “in the mix” enjoying the competition. After college, he and high school friends had a “career” in city league softball until their age forced them to convert to ”short court” basketball at the Y. Later years, there was always time to fit in a round of golf, with Tom the leading funster.
Tom Austin did not know a stranger. Conversations were easy for him and perhaps helped him to have a successful 33 year career with Kellogg’s. Tom put family first always, as he and Lisa traveled to new cities with a determination to create “home” among new friends whom they graciously welcomed into their home often. Many a Sunday afternoon found a group of friends cheering Tom’s beloved Green Bay packers or St. Louis Cardinals.
Tom was a loving partner to his wife Lisa, often bringing her into the celebration of antics with neighborhood friends or sporting buddies. What a wonderful pair who enjoyed and lived life with joy. He was always beside his son Matt, coaching him in sports throughout school and giving him world-renown golfing advice to pass on to his own kids. Matt has his dad’s legacy of love for sports and his spirit of loyalty to friends. His daughter Samantha shared his spirit of adventure as they shared a very special relationship of mutual trust and respect. Tom loved and encouraged her pursuits in art and music and left her with a zest for life and creativity. They often dreamed up their own father-daughter escapades.
Life-long friends recall Tom as “a generous spirit and a steadfast friend” “the brother I wanted” “a blessing from God” “an honor to call him my friend.” They each will miss Tom’s lessons of living life to its fullest.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Lisa (Cody) Austin of Evansville, IN; his son Matthew (Tara) of St. Charles, MO; his daughter Samantha of Evergreen, Colorado. He leaves three beautiful grandchildren: Jack, Keegan, and Leni whom he adored. His spirit lives in them. He is survived also by brothers Michael Austin of St. Francis, IN and Jim (Vicky) Austin of Evansville, IN; sister Susan Garrett of Evansville and nieces and nephews with whom he shared lots of fun times.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James “Red” and Peggy Austin; his brother Richard, and his sister Marcia.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 am until mass time at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 28 at St. Benedict Cathedral, 1328 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN, with Fr. Tyler Underhill officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 2500; Mesker Park Drive, Evansville, IN. Luncheon will follow in the Woodward Center at the church.
