Known affectionately as “B” to her family and friends, Beatriz was born in Austin, Texas, to Luiz and Beatriz Calderon. A proud graduate of Travis High School in Austin, she later continued her education with a Bachelor of Arts from George Mason University. On Christmas Day in 1961, she married the love of her life, Ramon Garcia, in her hometown of Austin.
Beatriz was a true force of nature. A dedicated activist, she was deeply immersed in the political and civic life of Fairfax County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Her unwavering passion for the Democratic Party and her tireless contributions to local progress were central to her identity. Beyond her political advocacy, Beatriz served with grace as an “Arlington Lady” at Arlington National Cemetery, providing a comforting presence and ensuring no service member was ever buried alone.
Her green thumb was as legendary as her civic spirit. As a Certified Master Gardener through the Fairfax County Master Gardeners, she channeled her love for gardening into the "Let’s Grow" program. There, she visited local schools to plant the seeds of horticulture in the next generation. She was also a staple at County plant clinics, offering expert guidance to help her neighbors’ gardens thrive. Beatriz was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ramon Garcia; her parents; and twelve siblings—seven sisters and five brothers.
Her vibrant legacy lives on through her children, Kelly Confer (Edward) and Danielle Hewitt (John); her cherished grandchildren, Rachel, Natalie, Samuel, and Kendal; and her brother, Luiz Calderon of Austin, Texas. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who will deeply miss her strength and wit.
