Obituary of Elizabeth Colby Jones
Elizabeth Colby Jones died peacefully of natural causes on September 20 in Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Carroll Graham Jones. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Rebecca Jones (Donald), sons Graham Jones (Diane) and Stephen Jones (Rachel), grandchildren Jack and Sydney Jones, as well as many relatives and friends. Elizabeth was born February 18, 1941, in Evergreen, Alabama. She studied music at Troy State and Sinclair colleges, focusing on Chopin’s piano works. A devoted homemaker and mother, she lived in Annandale, Virginia, for 51 years, where she held leadership positions in civic organizations including Welcome Wagon and the Women’s Club of Springfield. She also became a sought-after decorator seamstress whose designs graced beautiful homes throughout Virginia and Washington, D.C., as well as the pages of national magazines. Those who knew Elizabeth will remember her kindness, wit and infectious laugh. They will also recall her astonishing acumen at bridge, mahjongg, crossword puzzles, poker and Scrabble — and the way she attributed every win to good luck. Of all her talents, the greatest was her ability to connect with others and lift their spirits. When she moved to Richmond in 2019, she brought this great gift with her and was beloved by her friends and caregivers. A memorial service will be held Monday, September 26, at 11 a.m. at Demaine Funeral Home (10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030). In lieu of flowers, consider perpetuating Elizabeth’s legacy by performing an act of kindness for someone who needs it. It’s what she did, and the world is a better place for it.
