Sue was born on December 14, 1932, in Logan County, West Virginia, to Bernie and Juanita (Hill) Meade. A coal miner’s daughter, she grew up in a large, close family with many aunts, uncles and cousins who she also considered close friends. Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Crummer; her parents; her sisters, Carolyn Haden and Peggy Comer; and her brother, Danny Meade. She is survived by her children, Laura (Bob) Gac, Jim Crummer, and Leigh (Pat) Banducci; her grandchildren, Sam (Ali) Crummer, Allie Gac Wertz, Josh (Halie) Crummer, Chris Gac, Claire Banducci, and Matthew Banducci; and three great-granddaughters.
Sue graduated from Marshall University with a teaching degree, taking time off to teach in a one-room West Virginia schoolhouse to pay for her schooling. Seeking adventure, she and another teacher friend moved to Venezuela to teach in a school for the children of expatriates working for the Creole Oil Company, where she met her husband, Roger. They began their family and welcomed their three children while in Venezuela. After returning to the United States, the family settled in Fairfax, Virginia, in 1964, where Sue earned her Master of Education from George Mason University. She continued using her teaching skills working as a substitute teacher while her children were young.
When Roger started his own business, Sue took accounting classes and became the company bookkeeper, a skill she later used in service to her church, St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church. Working at St. Matthew’s was a highlight of her career where she enjoyed a fun and caring environment. As a long-time member of the church, she served on the Altar Guild and participated in the Esther Circle and Friends of Naomi. After St. Matthew’s, Sue worked organizing conferences at AFCEA International. Throughout her life, Sue served her community for many years as an election official. Sue was also a dedicated member of P.E.O. where she supported women’s education through her service and advocacy.
Sue loved playing games, shopping, and traveling but her favorite thing was spending time with her family and friends. She was a loyal fan and supporter of her grandchildren’s sports and would attend games as often as she could. She happily babysat and enjoyed beach vacations with the grandkids. Annual trips each fall with her high school friends were always a highlight of her year. During her “retired” time living at Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, she enjoyed an active social life with game, walking, and supper clubs. She will be remembered for her independent spirit, dedication, and the care she showed to those around her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, 8617 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA, Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org, in Sue’s memory.
