John David Hammond, known also as John, John David, Johnny, or Johnny H, was born on July 19, 1978 in Huntsville, AL, to John Herndon and Karen (Key) Hammond. Shortly thereafter, the Hammond family moved to Fairfax, VA, where John spent his childhood. During these years, he was involved in a vast array of activities, from t-ball to competitive swimming, handbell ringing to skateboarding, mountain biking to marching band, chorus to the founding of a hacky sack club. He attended the high school formerly known as W.T. Woodson, graduating in 1996. He attended Colby College in Waterville, ME and graduated in 2000 with a degree in anthropology, which set him up nicely for his eventual career as a top-notch bicycle technician.
John had many interests. In no order whatsoever, he loved the outdoors, kayaking, biking, camping, hiking, snowboarding, shooting, disc golfing. He loved the family farm in Illinois. He liked creature comforts like heated blankets, his towel warmer, nice sheets. He loved fine wine, Dale sweaters and flying in business class. He loved traveling. He was proud to be partly Norwegian. He loved sports and going to games of every kind. He loved being at the pool. He was a fan of little libraries, legos, scented candles and his Ninja Foodie.
John leaves behind a group of people who were so very important to him: family members Jack (Dad), Kristin, Kirk, Dick, Maureen, Bridgette and Marylu, his girlfriend Elisa, his close friends Alex, Lindsay, Hendrick, Mai, and many more. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered for his good nature and unique sense of humor. In lieu of flowers or donations please find time to call up someone you love and make a plan to spend some time outside together, in honor and memory of John.
