John James Vargo Jr.

John J. Vargo, Jr. died on June 8, 2023 at Fairfax Hospital after a long illness. He is survived by Barbara Ruhl Vargo, his wife of 60 years; their three children, Jennifer, Christopher (Jenna), and Matthew (Viktoria); and six grandchildren. John is a graduate of NC State in Raleigh, NC and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California. After graduation from NC State, he joined the US Army and served his country for 28 years. Upon retirement he and his family settled in Springfield, VA. In addition to stateside, he served in Germany, twice in Korea (one unaccompanied), and Okinawa where their sons were born. A big fan of USC and NCS John seldom missed college football on TV. An avid golfer, he and Barbara also enjoyed “seeing the world” and being a tourist at home and abroad. He and Barbara were always ready to pack a bag and go! John positively impacted his many friends and all those who had the good fortune to cross his path. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosalia Vargo; his brother, Thomas J. Vargo; and a beloved niece, Leta Vargo Costello. May he rest in peace always! “Our love stretches any distance.”
