passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021. Lucky was born July 14, 1938 in the District of
Columbia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marbury and Naomi Gawen, and
granddaughter, Lane Summer Larson.
Lucky filled his days with work, laughter, and life. He was a man of many talents.
Enlisting in the Air Force in 1956, Lucky spent time overseas. He was very proud of his work as
a skilled tradesman, working as an elevator and escalator constructor for 17 years before leaving
the trade and pursuing his dream to open his own business, Lucky Bee Plants and Produce
Company. He continued to work throughout the remainder of his life, most recently with the
Washington Post and Quest Diagnostics.
Lucky’s interests included watching the Washington Redskins, University of Virginia
Football, and boxing. He enjoyed tinkering with his tools, hunting, and being on the road. Lucky
touched a number of lives and was adored by many. Lucky had the ability to make friends with
anyone he met and made everyone feel very special. These traits live on in his children and
grandchildren.
Lucky is survived by his sister, Doris Bridges of Georgia, his daughter April (Dave)
Larson of South Carolina, his sons Matthew (Elizabeth) Gawen of Ohio, and Gabriel (Margaret)
Gawen of Virginia. He enjoyed the love and laughter of his grandchildren Casey Gawen,
Benjamin Gawen, Jayna Gawen, Allison Gawen, Zachary Gawen, Maxwell Gawen, Grace
Larson, and Camille Larson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital
or The Wounded Warrior Project, both causes that he was passionate about.
