IN THE CARE OF
Demaine Funeral Home – Fairfax
Theresa (Steuernagel) Toloczko, formerly of Fairfax, Virginia and Orlando, Florida died peacefully surrounded by family on November 22 at age 93 in McLean Virginia after a brief illness.
Terry leaves behind sons Matthew (wife Lynn) of Great Falls, John (wife Susan) of Vienna, Mike (wife Kerri) of Sterling; daughter Marcia Catello of Orlando, daughter-in-law Heidi Toloczko of Great Falls; grandchildren Thora, Sonia, Julia, Ian, Alec, Evan, Anna, Ali, John and Nick Toloczko; Tony, Jeffrey, Brian Catello and Kimberly Catello-Thomas; great-grandchildren Kaylee Catello, Julian and Hayden Thomas, and step-grandchildren Caitlin Smith and Connor Houston. She is pre-deceased by husband Myron (“Ski”) Toloczko, son Marc Toloczko and brothers Carl and Herman Steuernagel II.
Born on Staten Island on April 28, 1926 to Herman and Julia (Anderle) Steuernagel, Terry’s first adventure of many to come was leaving America to work for the Army in Germany at the age of 19, where she met her beloved husband Ski. She and Ski lived for a few years in Washington DC, then a few years in Tehran, Iran and finally settled into Fairfax, Virginia.
After the death of her husband in 1975, Terry again moved to Germany as a secretary for the U.S. intelligence services and later worked in Hawaii before retiring to Florida. Her passions were reading, traveling and friendships. She visited nearly every European country, Egypt, China, Russia, Israel, Thailand and Costa Rica, just to name a few. A devoted friend to everyone she ever met, Terry loved to keep in touch with “travel reports” she sent regularly to friends and family.
Terry loved crafts, and was known as “the flower lady” as she always presented her handmade floral corsages to family and friends, new and old. Her creativity and talent were an important part of the craft program at Sunrise. A lifelong Lutheran, she also was a regular attendee of Sunday Services at Sunrise led by her friend Pastor Wayne Thompson.
A service celebrating Terry’s life will be held at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3810 Meredith Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030 on Monday, December 9 at 11am. Interment will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Rd. Fairfax, 22032.
The family would also like to thank the staff of Sunrise of McLean for the friendship and loving care they provided to “Miss Terry” over the last several years.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for any donation to the education trust dedicated to the children of Terry’s son Marc and Heidi Toloczko. The Trust can be found at https://toloczkoeducationfund.mydagsite.com/ or by searching online for “Toloczko Education Fund.”
