Thomas Edwin Shinn, age 80, of Arlington, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Thomas "Tom" Shinn was born on Friday, April 10th 1942 in New Jersey, and graduated from the University of North Florida 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. Tom served in the US Army before marrying his wife, Karen Diane Simmons, on July 9th, 1966 in Boca Raton, FL.
Tom worked for Coca-Cola in the 1970s, a fact that brought much joy to the neighborhood he lived in Jacksonville, FL since he had a fully stocked coke machine outside his house at all times. Ultimately Tom and his family moved to Centreville, VA in 1983 where he worked for Wang Laboratories, later co-founding a government and military intelligence firm from which he retired in 2021.
Tom loved to tinker. He was always improving his home in Centreville, and taught his sons carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing. Not a year went by when something major wasn’t being changed in his home. He spent many weekends helping his wife Karen improve her gardens: he built the garden beds, and she planted them.
He is preceded in death by his mother Ruth, father Ronald, and wife Karen Simmons Shinn. He is survived by his sisters Lorelei Shaw of State College, PA; Debbie Walsh of Park City, UT; and Patricia Graham of Tampa, FL; and sons Michael Thomas Shinn of Centreville, VA and Scott Reid Shinn of Arlington, VA.
A visitation for Thomas will be held Friday, November 11, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Demaine Fairfax Funeral Home, 10565 Main St, Fairfax, Virginia 22030, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM
