Ruth E. Astley

Born in New Bedford, Ruth was the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Bertha (Walmsley) Johnson and the sister of the late Allen R. Johnson. A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Ruth spent her childhood summers on Martha’s Vineyard beginning at just seven weeks old—memories she treasured throughout her life.

Ruth was the beloved wife of the late Robert “Bob” Astley, whom she married on October 6, 1962. Together, they shared a beautiful life filled with love, family, faith, and creativity. One of their greatest joys was participating in theatre productions, a pastime that brought them closer and enriched the lives of many around them.

A proud graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1947, Ruth went on to work for The First National Bank, the Gas Company and later at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she retired in 1995. Organized, dependable, and a natural problem-solver, she excelled in bookkeeping and “crunching numbers,” bringing diligence and care to every task.

Ruth’s life was defined by her devotion to her family and her many talents. She loved outings with her daughter, shopping trips, and meals shared with family and friends. A gifted crafter, she knitted many scarves for her daughter, created intricate needlepoint pieces, and explored cake decorating with joy and artistry. She was also a wonderful cook and a skilled baker, filling her home with warmth, welcome, and the smell of something delicious in the oven.

An active member of her community, Ruth belonged to the Junior Women’s Club and the Women’s Federation of North Baptist Church. She and Bob also volunteered for several years as poll workers during city elections—service they both took great pride in.

Ruth is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Carol R. Astley Calnan, and son-in-law, James A. Calnan; as well as a niece, nephew, and great-nephew. She will be remembered for her kindness, her gentle strength, her creativity, and the steadfast love she gave so generously.
