Gene served his country in the Vietnam War with the Navy, carrying forward a steady courage and resilience that remained evident throughout his life. He later worked through the plumbers and pipefitters union and remained a proud member even after retiring—an enduring reflection of his loyalty and devotion to the work and community that shaped him.
In the most meaningful measure of a life, Gene’s compassion and faithfulness were perhaps best seen in his unwavering dedication to Pat. When she received her dementia diagnosis, Gene promised he would take care of her no matter what; even after their divorce, he kept that promise. They stayed together for 25 years until her passing. Gene was also preceded in death by the couple’s daughter, who passed at birth.
An adventurous spirit with a gentle, kind-hearted way about him, Gene found joy in the familiar comforts of a well-kept machine and the open road. He loved tinkering with his motorcycles—cleaning them until they shined and working on them so they were always in tip-top shape. As a member of a Harley Davidson motorcycle group, he took many trips with fellow Harley enthusiasts, sharing in the camaraderie that comes from generosity of time, good humor, and a love of the ride.
A cherished and beloved resident of the Villas of Holly Brook, Gene made it his personal mission to help others feel at home. As the self-proclaimed “Welcoming Committee,” he greeted new residents with thoughtful attention and a warm steadiness, ensuring each person felt seen, included, and cared for.
And as Gene would always say, “That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!”
