John was born May 12, 1931 in Robinson, IL to John and Florence Marie (Walters) Slagle. He married Mary Jo Beier on December 26, 1958 in Centralia, IL. Together they shared 61 years of marriage. She survives and resides in Smithton.
Also surviving are their three children, Marie (Chris) Zajac of Festus, MO, John H. Slagle Jr. of Belleville, IL and Amy (Christopher) Gray of Belleville, IL; three grandchildren, Synthia (Tony) Braswell of Fairview Heights, IL, Mandi Slagle of Fairview Heights, IL, and Alanna Gray of Belleville, IL; great-grandchildren, Daylen Braswell, Levi Helferstay-Braswell and Kairi Braswell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence Slagle; one brother, Charles Robert “Bob” Slagle; and one niece, Susan Ann Schmidt.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army, during the Korean War. Following his time in the service, he worked for 10 years with the United States Post Office at Union Station. He then worked for 20 years as a claims representative at the social security office in East St. Louis, IL and Belleville, IL. John will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial donation may be made to the VFW Post 805, O’Fallon, IL, where John was a member or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
VISITATION: A visitation for John will be held from 4:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Lake View Funeral Home, 5000 N. Illinois St., Fairview Heights, IL 62208.
SERVICE: A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at First United Presbyterian Church, 1303 Royal Heights Rd, Belleville, IL 62223. Reverend Robert Dyer will officiate. Interment will follow at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.
