

It is with deep sorrow that Katherine Sharos passed away on May 19, 2026. She was born to Margaret Cooney Sharos and James Sharos on September 5, 1928, in East St. Louis Illinois and survived through the Great Depression.
Kathrine grew up on a small five-acre farm in unincorporated St. Clair County. The family was very self-sufficient. Katherine had a genuine love for the farm animals, especially Buttercup, the Guernsey cow.
She attended Bunkum primary school, 1st-8th grade, high school at Notre Dame Catholic Academy, (all girls), in Belleville IL. After graduation she was employed at Union Electric, (now Ameren), working her way up as the first woman General Supervisor for Missouri Plants, totaling 42 years before retiring. UE sent Katherine to two years of schooling at SIUE and through all those years taking care of her beloved mother.
Katherine had boundless energy and was highly intelligent. Through her journey of 97 years, she touched many lives with wisdom, humor and had an unwavering spirit of perseverance. Katherine was a lifelong learner. She loved to discover new things. She also had a passion for music, reading and practicing her Orthodox faith, and buying countless novels. Kathrine’s additional hobbies were playing the guitar, singing in the choir, Greek dancing, volunteering countless hours in the Philoptochos Society, and was the secretary of two Greek churches.
Katherine loved to take her mother on vacations to Europe (Greece), South America and other US destinations.
Her remarkable life is an inspiration to us all. She is greatly treasured and will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Sharos, and her mother Margaret Cooney Sharos, brothers and sisters, William (Olga) Sharos, Mondo (Bill) Robinson, George (Helen and Jeane Sharos), Constantine (Diane and Mary Sharos), Anastasia Sharos, Elizabeth (Nick) Jannakos, Christina Sharos, and Mary (George) Bude.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Sharos Jannakos of Albuquerque NM/Chicago IL., Brother-in-law George Bude of Chesterfield Missouri, and a host nieces and nephews including greats, five Godchildren, and their families and many cherished friends.
A memorial donation can be made to Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
Visitation will be held at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 405 Huntwood Rd, Swansea, IL 62226, on June 2, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Funeral Service at the same location from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
A Committal Service will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 9401 W Main St, Belleville, IL 62223, on June 2, 2026, at 12:15 pm.
