Adelino "Pete" Borges, age 93, of Westport, passed away at his residence Tuesday, January 21, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Edna W. (Tefts) Borges to whom he has been married for 71 years.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late Eugene and Maria (Pacheco) Borges, he lived in Westfield, MA and Fall River before moving to Westport.
A veteran of the US Navy, Pete served during World War II as a Navy Submariner. He worked in the construction industry for many years retiring as a shop steward in 1982. Mr. Borges was a life-long member of the Laborers International Union of North America, Local 610.
Pete had a great sense of humor and enjoyed storytelling. He was also extremely knowledgeable about both foreign and American made automobiles; his knowledge of their specifications was uncanny and never failed to impress dealership staff. Mr. Borges was an avid New England sports team fan and enjoyed reading; history being his favorite subject. Pete was an expert pitch player and enjoyed playing card games with family and friends. His best times spent were with his family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Borges is survived by three children, Diane Fairbanks and her husband Paul of Dartmouth, Richard Borges and his wife Bernadette of Westport, and Judy Tremblay and her husband Philip of Jay, ME, two sisters, Lydia Campos and Lucille Murphy, both of Tiverton, seven grandchildren, David Borges, Kristin Borges, Erik Drewniak, Matthew Tremblay, Stephanie Bennett, Danielle Tremblay, and Michael Borges. He also has five great-grandchildren, one late great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 1:00PM at the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Friday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Luke’s Memorial Fund, c/o St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 315 Warren St., Fall River, MA 02721. Mr. Borges' burial service will be at a later date at the family cemetery in Westfield, MA.
