

Richard N. Sands Sr., “Dick,” age 74, of Fall River, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013 in St. Anne’s Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley P. (Harrop) Sands to whom he has been married for the past 55 years.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Matthew P. and Helen (Vangilst) Sands, he moved to the area in 1955.
A veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the U.S.S. Yellowstone and worked in the shipyard at the Newport Naval Base. He worked as a foreman at the former G.E.T. Sylvania Lighting in Fall River and prior to that was a machine operator at Checon.
Mr. Sands was a scout leader for the boy scouts and was an avid New England sports fan. He enjoyed camping, bowling, cook-outs, and most of all spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter; Helen A. Dubois and her husband Alan of Queensbury, NY, three sons; Richard N. Sands Jr. and his wife Lillian “Dolly”, Brian J. Sands and Todd M. Sands all of Fall River, one brother; Matthew P. Sands and his wife Barbie of FL, eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren with one on the way and several nieces and nephews. He was father of the late Paul L. Sands.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visiting hours on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 11:00AM to 1:00PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River. Contributions in his honor may be made to the family, 831 Globe Street, Apt. #1, Fall River, Massachusetts 02724. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River.
