

Roland Gomes, age 86, a former professional fighter, of Fall River, died Saturday, September 29, 2012 in the Sarah S. Brayton Nursing Care Center. He was the husband of the late Maureen E. (Dallagher) Gomes.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Domingos and Ida (Simao) Gomes, he had been a lifelong resident of the city.
A Veteran of the United States Army Air Force, he served during World War II. He worked for the Department of Public Works for the city of Fall River and prior to that he was a fountain manager for several Woolworth stores in the New England area.
Mr. Gomes was a welterweight boxer who fought in the late 1940’s and the early 1950’s. He was a former communicant of Sacred Heart and Santo Christo Churches. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Cathedral where he was a collector and was a eucharistic minister at St. Anne’s Hospital.
He is survived by one brother; Domingos Gomes, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Somerset, several nieces and nephews, including Deborah Barriera and her husband John of Somerset, and his good friends; Dr. Mouded and his wife and their two sons and Donna Mellon of Swansea. He was brother of the late Antone and Manuel Gomes.

His Funeral will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 9:00AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Spring St., Fall River. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen St., 2nd floor, Framingham, MA 01701. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
