Sylvia B. (Maerowitz) Lechan, age 94, of Fall River, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 in Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Dr. Harry M. Lechan to whom she has been married for the past 71 years.
Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Ethel (Platow) Maerowitz.
Mrs. Lechan was a graduate of Norwalk High School, completed one year of nurses training at Norwalk Hospital and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. From 1942 to 1944, during WWII, she worked at the Sikorsky Aircraft Factory in Bridgeport, CT as an assembler made famous by “Rosie the Riveter”. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a member of Temple Beth El in Fall River.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Ronald M. Lechan and his wife Carole of Natick, Alan R. Lechan and his wife Judy of Dartmouth, Lawrence B. Lechan of Westport; one daughter, Cynthia G. Goodman and her husband Steve of Hollywood, FL; four grandchildren, Arianna, Jeremy, Jonathan, Lailee; one great grandchild, Jenna and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Aaron and Max Maerowitz.
Her graveside service will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1:00PM in the Hebrew Cemetery, 73 McMahon Dr., Fall River. In lieu of flowers contributions in her honor may be made to the Tufts Medical Center, Cardiology Dept. Development Office, Box 231, 800 Washington St., Boston, MA 02111. Shiva will be observed Friday at the home of Alan Lechan from 2:00 – 5:00PM and at the home of Ron Lechan Sunday 3:00 – 5:00PM and 7:00 – 9:00PM and Monday – Wednesday, 7:00 – 9:00 PM.
