Alan Dorr Breed
8 April, 1933 – 11 May, 2022
IN THE CARE OF
National Funeral Home & Memorial Park
From humble beginnings growing up in Corning, NY with his brother Paul H. Breed (also USCG), Alan rose to Rear Admiral of the US Coast Guard followed by a post career as the COO building and running the Marine Spill Response Corporation. With his wife of 63 years, Janet, always by his side, they both retired and ran a duplicate bridge association in northern VA as well as a bridge program on their assigned ship of the Crystal Cruise Lines for many years.
Always good for a story about his love of fishing, or one of his many sports like basketball, tennis and golf, Alan was a true American leader with loyalty to country, family and friends. As CO of the CGC Gallatin, Alan was one of two of the first Commanding Officers of a USCG combatant ship to have women assigned to the permanent crew.
Alan’s academic achievements included a BS Engineering, US Coast Guard Academy ‘55, Masters Public Administration University of Pittsburg ’70 and graduate of National War College ’76. His specialties included Surface Operations, Aids to Navigation, Merchant Marine Safety, Oil Pollution Prevention and Officer Personnel. His list of awards included: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Gold Star, USCG Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, USCG Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars, and the USCG Achievement Medal. Alan and his wife made many friends during his 34 years of active duty including assignments in Governors Island, NY, Miami, FL and Portsmouth, VA. Alan remained active in the USCG Academy Alumni Association. Alan also served on the Board of Trustees of the Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute.
Survivors include Alan’s nephew Paul T. Breed, his nephew’s son Paul A. Breed and the Breeds’ beloved assistant for 32 years, Ruby Madera.
