Anna Mays was a kind and talented weaver who volunteered for many years with the Woodmont Weavers, a workshop in Arlington County for people with intellectual disabilities.  She was a wonderful person with an adventuresome streak who inspired everyone who knew her.

I, too, knew Anna from a critique group (as mentioned by others). She was so creative and talented with her weaving, drawing, painting, and book making. She always amazed us with something new and wonderful. I remember her pulling out 6 or 8 versions of trees and skies that she just did one afternoon. She was also smart and thoughtful and knew so much about art (and many other things...we rarely discussed math). A beautiful and caring person who left us all with one of her beautiful books.  

I knew Anna through our DC-area based art critique group. She always amazed me with the art she brought to share in our critique sessions. The art was remarkably diverse and masterful. Anna was modest about her accomplishments but we knew that she was celebrated in the art world with her work. Last summer she made beautiful booklets of her work and gave each member of the group a booklet. I will cherish it and know that I am richer for having known Anna who never failed to delight us with both her work and her input. 

We first met Anna at a watercolor workshop in Maine many years ago.  She became a charter member of our art critique group.  It always amazes us that a mathematician could be so incredibly creative with her art and her tapestries.  We loved to meet at her house on the hill, surrounded by flowers and filled with art, looms, books and her quirky cat with the long name.   Not too long ago, she gave each member of our group a handmade art book.  We were all thrilled and will cherish these parting gifts from an incredibly talented, kind and modest friend.  Whenever we see a stalk of iris or a tree with gnarly trunk or twisted limbs, we will remember Anna and thank her for bringing such beauty into our lives.
