Carol Ann Murray was born September 15, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts to Robinson Murray, Jr., and Grace Hubbard Murray. She graduated from Connecticut College in 1965 with a degree in Economics. Carol then attended the University of Michigan and received a Master’s Degree in Asia Affairs Japan Studies. In 1968, Carol moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for a year for the Agency for International Development. She joined the Department of Commerce in 1969 to work on the Japan Desk. During periods when she was working in the U.S., she satisfied her love of music by singing with the Choral Arts Society of Washington. From 1975 to 1977, Carol worked in Sydney, Australia as Director of Market Research at the U.S. Trade Center. In 1983, she met and married Chung Kim, a Korean businessman. Toward the end of that year, Carol Murray Kim joined the Foreign Commercial Service, and was assigned as Commercial Attache to the Trade Center in Seoul, Korea. She served until 1988. On return to the U.S., Carol attended the Foreign Service Language Institute and studied both Korean and Spanish. From 1989 to 1993, she served as the U.S. Trade Center Director in Mexico City. Carol was Commercial Counselor first at the American Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand from 1994 to 1997, and then in New Delhi, India from 1998 to 2001. From 2001 to 2002, she was in the Dominican Republic, serving as Regional Commercial Counselor for the Caribbean. She returned to the U.S. in 2002 as the Director of the Commerce Department's District Office in Richmond, VA. In 2003, she retired and returned to live in Northern Virginia. Carol loved concerts, ballets, plays, and spending time with friends. She also travelled around the world on much-loved cruises. Carol is survived by her husband, Chung Kim, and children; Heesoo Song and Daeshik Kim, and four grandchildren; her brother, Robinson Murray III, and his wife, Susan.
