Catherine M. “Kitty” Merendino, 100, of McLean, Virginia, died on April 15, 2020 at Arleigh Burke Pavilion in McLean. She is predeceased by her parents Albert Paul and Doris Louise (Powell) Milligan and her late husband of 47 years, S. Norman Merendino.
Catherine was born in Revells Neck, south of Princess Anne on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She graduated from Washington High School in Princess Anne, Maryland and Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. After graduation she returned to the Eastern Shore and worked as a bookkeeper at Martin and Schwartz , a gas pump manufacturer in Salisbury. She met and married her husband in Salisbury and then moved away eventually settling in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Arlington and subsequently, Annandale.
She was a loving mother and homemaker. Like many homemakers of her generation, she was an extraordinary cook. She belonged to Friendship United Methodist Church where she was active in church activities. She served as a parent volunteer in support of her children’s school activities. She liked to garden and was a member of the Sunny Acres Garden club. She was an accomplished seamstress and needlepointer. She liked to travel and enjoyed many cruises and family beach vacations. Fiercely independent, she was a quiet woman who did not like to be the center of attention; she was generous, and she was wise.
Survivors include her two children: daughter, Catherine M. Hoover of Fairfax Station, VA; son, King A. (Kathy) Merendino of Walkersville, MD; granddaughter, Meredith L. Kloman of Fairfax, VA; great grandson, Michael C. Kloman of Fairfax, VA; and devoted companion, Ximena Fernandez of Arlington, VA.
