Denny Benjamin Nelson

Denny (Ben) Nelson, 86, of Falls Church, VA, passed away on Monday, February 4th, 2019 at the Virginia Hospital Center. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00AM Sunday, February 10 at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street in Falls Church, VA. Burial will follow at Brown Chapel Cemetery, 1314 Hunter Mill Road in Vienna, VA.

Denny was born on October 03, 1932 in Notomine, WV to Denny and Hannah Nelson.

On June 19, 1955, he married Shirley Samples in Marylard. Denny was in the United States Army, and served in the Korean War. He returned home and began a career as a butcher for a few different companies. He retired and began working for Alpha Lawn and Garden, until he retired completely.

He loved his family and friends, and cherished spending time with them. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing until he could no longer do it, due to medical issues. He loved tinkering with small engine repair--anything from lawn mowers to mini bikes. Another hobby he had was gambling. He regularly purchased Mega-million tickets and scratch-offs. He loved playing cards and going to Charles Town, for horseracing at first, for many years, but when the slots were introduced, he all but gave up on the horses!

Denny is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley; his sons, Glen DuBose, Steve DuBose, (Nancy), Ricky Nelson, (Debbie); his daughters, Sherry Nelson, Lynda Nelson Lee, (John), Kimberly Nelson Freeman, (Alan), and Lori Nelson; his sisters, Bonnie Massie, (Lester), Diana Gayle Nelson, his brothers, David Nelson, (Ann), Ricky Nelson, (Debbie), and sister-in-law, Jan Nelson. He had 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Denny and Hannah Nelson, his brothers, Robert Nelson, (Pat), Clifford Nelson, and Terry Nelson.
