A lifelong resident of Northern Virginia and formerly of Falls Church, VA, Ernest was born December 29, 1927 in Amherst, MA. He was predeceased by brothers Harold, Earl and Roger Bacon. His sister, Vera Sherman (John) survives him.
He served his country in the US Navy. Upon completion of his service, he attended American University, where he met the love of his life, Shirley. After a long career with the General Services Administration as a Budget Analyst, he retired from Federal Service.
In retirement, he became a member of The Arlington-Fairfax Elks Lodge, where he and Shirley were active participants in bingo, golf, dinner dances, travel and charitable events for the community.
He kept up with his friends from the General Services Administration by attending their informal "breakfast club" meetings each week.
Ernest loved to travel- by car, plane, train, cruise ship or bus. He and Shirley visited many places in Europe by bus, and made lifelong friends from those travels. His most memorable trip was to Russia- and he loved to tell the stories about that trip when asked what his favorite trip was.
They were active in their neighborhood on Fairwood Lane. Although many have moved on, they kept in touch regularly, sharing events of their children and grandchildren.
Family was most important to Ernie. He was proud of his son, Robert and spouse, Lisa and daughter, Barbara. His greatest joys were his grandchildren: Caitlin McBride and her spouse, Troy, George Bacon, Jessica Mewborn and Emily Bacon. When the family extended to the next door neighbors, Chuck and Lydia Brancato, by marriage of his father in law, he was delighted.
We all felt Shirley's loss in 2012. We are confident that they are reunited and dancing in heaven.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Capitol Caring, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, VA 22042-in memory of Ernest Bacon.
