Goldie was born on the Lower East Side of New York City to Alex and Lena Steinberg on July 27, 1928. She married Herbert Irving Shapiro on March 26, 1949.
Goldie’s warmth, openness and sense of humor endeared her to anyone lucky enough to know her. Her door was aways open; she thrived on meeting new people and welcoming them as friends. She loved to bake, her Mandelbrot (aka Jewish biscotti) was second to none. A two-time kidney cancer survivor, Goldie was active in cancer support groups in the Rockville area, fundraising through gift wrapping at the mall and other activities. While very independent, she cherished her time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She had a passion for games and loved the challenge of Mahjong, Rummikub and computer word puzzles. She loved to sing, dance, keep up with current events, politics, even medical research, and was always ready for thought provoking discussion. Goldie had a gift of character that allowed her to cross generations…
Goldie is preceded in death by her beloved husband Herb. She is survived by:
Daughters Linda Shapiro Bouchard (spouse Michel), Janet Sue Mildrew (spouse Don), Son Michael Alan, Daughter in law Hilary Schwab, Granddaughters Alison Shapiro, Melanie Shapiro, and Amy Mildrew.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Bay Village Sunrise for their dedication and compassion in Goldie’s care. Hospice of the Chesapeake should also be recognized for their role providing care and comfort in her final days.
Gravesite services will be held at 10:00am Monday June 8th, 2025 at King David Memorial Gardens. A brief family ceremony will be at the gravesite (burial afterward).
