It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hans Rudolph Bachmann, Jr., who transitioned peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the age of 70, in Washington, DC. Born on June 24, 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, Hans was a beloved son, partner, brother, and friend—a person whose vibrant spirit touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Hans was the cherished son of Hans R. Bachmann and Eulalia Selig Bachmann, who preceded him in death. His early life was filled with laughter, creativity, and a love for the arts which would define his later years. After graduating from Galion High School in 1972, he went on to pursue higher education at Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. His thirst for knowledge culminated in a Juris Doctor from Ohio Northern University in 1981, setting him on a path that balanced both legal expertise and artistic endeavor.
For over four decades, Hans worked as a legal editor for the Bureau of National Affairs, showcasing his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication to his profession. Yet, his true passion lay within the realm of theater. Hans was an accomplished actor, director, and writer, devoting much of his career to the stage, where he brought countless characters to life, especially in musicals. His talent and dedication earned him a special place in the hearts of audiences and fellow performers alike.
Hans’ legacy is carried on by his loving partner and husband of 40 years, Kevin Murphy, with whom he shared a deep and abiding love that blossomed into an extraordinary partnership in 1985. Hans is also survived by his devoted sister Susan (Bachmann) Matthews, brother-in-law Dan Matthews and many loving relatives spread across the United States, Germany, and Switzerland.
As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Hans was actively engaged in the artistic community, always ready to support fellow artists while nurturing his own creative passions. His commitment to his craft and to those around him will be remembered fondly.
Hans was not only a talented artist and professional; he was a compassionate and supportive friend. He had a natural ability to connect with others, bringing joy and comfort to those in his life. His kindness and unwavering support will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful doctors and staff at Georgetown University Hospital for their care and support during Hans’s final days.
