

Jim Hicks was the loving husband of Laurinda Lopes Hicks for 48 years. Jim was the only son born to Mary Catherine Swiggett Hicks and James Franklin Hicks, Sr. in High Point, North Carolina on December 23rd, 1944. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Harvard University. Jim had 3 children; Vivian Lopes Roper, Rebecca Hicks Sweda, and James Lopes Hicks and 2 sons-in-law, Jason D. Sweda and Stephen L. Roper. He is also survived by his four grandchildren; Kaitlyn, Cassielle, Tyler, and Lianor. Jim had many professional accomplishments to note, but highlights include serving in the Peace Corps from 1966 – 1968 in Bahia, Brazil and working at the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina. Jim joined the World Bank in 1985 in Washington, DC where he advised local governments as a Mission Leader in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Jim retired from the World Bank in December 2000 and pursued his other interests, which included gardening, family trips to the mountains and beaches, and watching the Washington Nationals baseball team.
Jim’s Memorial Service will be Saturday, June 11th at 10:30 am at Charles Wesley United Methodist Church, 6817 Dean Dr., McLean, VA 22101.
The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), or Charles Wesley United Methodist Church.
