Born in Conover, NC September 21, 1924, the youngest child of Robert and Rosa Deal Cloninger. She moved to Washington, DC after high school when her brother, Coite, told her of the opportunities there. Coite introduced her to Archie Simpson whom she married in 1944.
Martha retired from the Department Of Transportation in 1982. She and Archie enjoyed travelling, Lions Club and church activities until Archie died in 1988. She had been a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington since 1948. Martha loved cooking and gardening. Her favorite time was having the family for Sunday dinner.
Martha died peacefully on August 23, 2021. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Rosa Cloninger, husband, Archie and siblings, Lolly and Coite. She leaves behind to cherish her memory children A. Duane, Carol Johnson, Gary (Sharon), and Dale (Carol); grandchildren Alex, Greg, Andrew, Kim Hannon, Eric Johnson, Gary Jr., Spencer, Kalle, Derek Heilmann and Elizabeth Brunet; 14 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
A celebration of Martha's life will be held at a later date and interment will be with her husband Archie in Arlington National Cemetery.
