She was born Mary Charlotte Johnston on Jan. 5, 1932 in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania to Harriett Elizabeth (Green) and Stuart Lindsay Johnston. Mary attended Upper Darby High School, Hood College, and Moore
College of Art and Design.
Mary was a prolific artist and specialized in collages. She was very active in the art community in the DC/northern Virginia area, and was a member
of several art galleries, including The Art League and The Touchstone Gallery.
Mary loved the beach and spent many happy hours on the beach, walking, beachcombing and painting watercolors.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Capt. USN-Ret. Darryl A. DeMaris, her parents, her four brothers Dudley, Robert, Alan and
Malcolm, and her beloved sister Elizabeth "Betsy" Schwegman. She leaves behind her daughter Laurie, son Michael, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary lived at Vinson Hall Retirement Community for 10 years, and leaves
behind many dear friends. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank
the wonderful staff of Vinson Hall for their care and consideration.
Per Mary's wishes, a service will not be held. Immediate family will hold a private ceremony in the summer to celebrate her life.
