
Mary M. Gaffney, age 94, who accompanied her husband on military assignments in Oklahoma, Alaska, Florida, Canada and the Washington, DC area in his role as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, died September 5, 2015 in Fairfax, Virginia of congestive heart failure.
Mary Margaret Woodward was born in Apache, Oklahoma and graduated from Apache High School in 1938. She later attended Blackwood Davis Business School in Oklahoma City.
Mrs. Gaffney supported her husband’s military career while raising three children as a stay-at-home mom. A long-time resident of McLean, she volunteered for St. John the Beloved Catholic Church and was a member of the Army Navy Country Club, where she enjoyed golf and bridge.
Her husband of 63 years, Air Force Colonel John W. Gaffney, died in 2005. Survivors include three sons, Michael Gaffney of Oakton, VA, Mark Gaffney of Chiloquin, OR and Matt Gaffney of Rehoboth Beach, DE, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Arrangements by Murphy Funeral Home. A memorial mass will take place at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 11900 Lawyers Road, Reston, VA on Wednesday, September 9 at 10:30am. Contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
