

after suffering cardiac arrest. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband
of 60 years, Paul J. Burke; was a loving mother to Nancy C. Burke, Madeleine J. Drummond (Thomas),
Janice E. Burke, Joseph A. Burke (Isabel), Catherine A. Burke, Patrick D. Burke (Patti),
Paul J. Burke (Gretchen), and Matthew C. Burke (Stacey); adored grandmother to
Bruce and Andy Drummond, Justin and Joseph Burke, Greg Edge, Timothy, Kelly and
John Paul Burke, and Emma, Claire, and Mary Burke. She was preceded in death
by her parents John M. and Josephine Z. Walsh, brothers John M. and Carl Z., and sisters
Elizabeth J. Toombs and Josephine Blum Zurenda. She is also survived by many nieces
and nephews.
Mrs. Burke was born February 13, 1925 in Watkins Glen, NY. Leaving Cornell University after her freshman year, she enlisted in the U.S. Cadet Nurses Corps., earning her RN from the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing in Sayre, PA in 1946. She was a gifted classified pianist and instilled a love of music in her family.
Over the years, Mrs. Burke used her nursing skills in private family practice in Elmira, NY, at the Virginia
Hospital Center in Arlington, VA, the infirmary at Marymount University in Arlington, VA, and, of course,
in raising her 8 children. She later enjoyed a number of interesting secretarial jobs, especially working in the office of the Fairfax County Supervisor for the Dranesville district. She was interested in local politics and served for a time as a Jury Commissioner in 1987 and worked many elections.
An active parishioner of St. John's Church in McLean since 1961, she sang in the church choir and served on various committees as a member of the Women's Council . Always interested in her children's
activities, she played the piano for the Longfellow Intermediate School chorus and performed a
variety of jobs at summer swim meets. No doubt she attended a large number of sporting and performing arts events.
Friends may call at MURPHY FALLS CHURCH FUNERAL HOME, 1102 W. Broad St. (Rt.7) on
Monday, October 10 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. John the Beloved Church, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, VA on Tuesday, October 11 at 10:30 a.m.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
