Born in Mabalacat, Pampanga, Philippines, Renato grew up surrounded by his siblings and cousins. His early years were shaped by resilience as he navigated the loss of his mother and the challenges of World War II. During the Japanese occupation, he supported American troops—an experience he recounted with pride throughout his life. Renato pursued higher education in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, leading to a successful career with Esso that allowed him to train and work in the United States and Europe.
In 1967, Renato met Honorata (Nor) the love of his life, through mutual friends. They married in July 1968 and shared over 52 years of unwavering partnership. In 1978, Renato made the courageous decision to move to the United States to create a brighter future for his family. Nor joined him in 1979, followed by their children—Rene Garcia, Honor Garcia-Tomchick, and Mary Hope Garcia Wharwood—in 1981.
Through sacrifices and hard work, Renato and Nor built a new life filled with love and opportunity. The family settled in their beloved home in Falls Church, Virginia where Renato grew vegetables and shared his bountiful harvest with others. Known for his resourcefulness and ingenuity, he was also a master craftsman and carpenter who delighted in updating his home or using his skills to help others.
Renato retired in 1996 after a distinguished career working with multiple embassies, including the Canadian Embassy. A devoted family man, Renato found joy in teaching his children and grandchildren practical life skills while also fostering their love for reading, poetry, art, and music. He also enjoyed writing fables and collecting gems, coins, and Civil War memorabilia.
Renato is survived by his children Rene Garcia, Honor Garcia-Tomchick, and Mary Hope Garcia Wharwood; and his grandchildren Gavin Tomchick, Grant Tomchick, Evangeline Wharwood, and James Wharwood.
Renato’s legacy of love, resilience, and generosity will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to his family and friends.
