
May 10, 2015, as the result of a stroke. Her final days were
spent surrounded by family, close friends and others whose
lives she had touched throughout her life. Shirley was born
March 13, 1936, in Martinsville, Virginia to Henry and Mary
Elizabeth Holt Hill and had a wonderful childhood there. She
attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond
where she was active in campus activities and was elected
Homecoming Queen and Web Yearbook Beauty. There she
met her future husband, Francis E. “Skip” Bishop, whom she
married shortly after graduation. They settled in Arlington
where they raised three sons, Bill, Chris, and Lee. As active
members of the community, the family developed many
lifelong friendships. When the children were older, Shirley
became a successful real estate agent specializing in the
Northern Virginia area. Memorial Baptist Church was a
center of her universe. Throughout the years she served
on many committees and became a deacon. Known for her
vivacious and energetic personality and hospitality, she helped
with many receptions and events in the church and in the
community.
Although preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and
her sister, she is lovingly survived by her sons, their families,
including six grandchildren, and special friend, Walter Monroe.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 18 from 5-8
p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Falls Church. Burial will take
place on Tuesday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at Union Cemetery in
Leesburg. A Service in Celebration of Her Life will take
place on Tuesday, May 19 at 3 p.m. at Memorial
Baptist Church in Arlington. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
