Stephen was my neighbor, playmate and classmate and a brother of my oldest, closest friend Sharron.  Interaction with our families began with our maternal grandmothers.  Throughout his life, Stephen was consistently gentle, intelligent, helpful, up for a game of any sort and loyal to his family and friends.  Not to say he wasn't also up for benign trickery with his subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humor.  He was special.  Although we have lost his physical presence, his spirit will always be with those of us who knew, valued and loved him.

I was privileged to work with Steve at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was a lovely, kind man and a genuine public servant. This world is a poorer place without him. The next world is better for including him. My condolences to all of his family and friends on their loss.

Wow, words truly cannot express  nor describe the many ways that Steve has touched my life.  Steve always approached everything with genuine love, tenderness and caring. He had great ears for listening and a tender voice when he spoke. I am so blessed to have shared so many wonderful times with Steve,our family and friends. Those wonderful times will empower me to handle those moments of sorrow.  While I may have an empty space in my heart it will be full again when I look back on the generous and miraculous love that Steve shared. Steve requested no tears and only asked us to enjoy life and open our hearts for love. Steve will always be with us when we touch our heart and think of him. Our Lord will certainly be getting an angel.  I'll miss you big brother, until we meet again.

I am very sorry to hear about this sad news. Steve was always pleasant to talk whenever he came to Leis Center to visit his wife, Nancy.  My heart goes out to family and friends.

To Rob:  I owed a portrait of your Mother, Nancy, to Steve, but cancers and the resultant death of my husband, Lew Watson in 2011, and the need to move from Falls Church, kept me from producing any art at all.  I was devastated.  It began with Beth's portrait to your parents on Mothers Day several years ago,  Beth visited Donna in our home many times.  Then Steve asked me to do Nancy's portrait when she passed, a companion piece alongside Beth's.  But major life changes got in the way.  Both your parents were tremendous people, and Beth was often at our house, always smiling.  My heart goes out to you, and I find comfort in learning that you have a family of your own now.  I'll still draw your Mom, and your Dad, at no charge if you want them beside Beth like your Dad wanted Nancy's portrait.  May you find comfort any way you can, and believe they remain with you in spirit throughout your life.  They've gone home, and you'll see them again.      My sister,Gloria Phelps, just called to let me know of Stephen's death.  I am shocked and crushed.  Steve and I are cousins, the same age, went to school together, and grew up together in Gouverneur, NY, sharing many great times together.  [My mother and his father were close siblings.]   Rob,I am in sad disbelief of the losses in your family, with the deaths of Beth, your Mom, and now your Dad.  Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, and I cherish my memories of times with Steve!  I wish I could be there.  May God hold you in his arms, and let you know your Dad is now once again in the arms of his beloved wife and daughter.
