Thomas Marshall Smith III (73) of Burke, Virginia passed away on May 30, 2024 after a 13-month battle with glioblastoma. Known fondly as Marshall, he was born in Annapolis, Maryland at the U. S. Naval Hospital, the son of Thomas Marshall Smith Jr. and Muriel Helene Smith. An Eagle Scout in his youth, Marshall also played intramural sports and competed on the crew team at Washington Lee High School, contributing to its various championships. After graduation, he went on to row in college. Marshall completed Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Rehabilitation Counseling at Virginia Commonwealth University, and also earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration at George Mason University. He worked for 41 years as a counselor and human services manager in the Fairfax field office of the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services. He was an avid Revolutionary War reenactor and an active member and captain of the 1st Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line from 1986 until his passing. In retirement, Marshall also enjoyed beekeeping, travel, sewing authentic 18th century attire, gardening, spending time with family and trips to the beach. He is survived by his wife Dotty Blazosky Smith and two children, LeeAnn Weintraub and Thomas Marshall Smith IV of California, as well as his son-in-law Matthew Weintraub and grandchildren Noah and Madeleine Weintraub. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Jeffrey Alan Smith (Noel) and Teresa Marie Smith. Family and friends of the family are invited for visitation on Friday, June 14 from 5-8 PM at the Smith home. Marshall will be laid to rest in Danville, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations can be made to the 1st Virginia Regiment in support of American History education or the American Cancer Society.
