Donald "Don" Francis Whitty, 88, born May 11, 1933 in the Bronx, NY passed away on January 27, 2022 peacefully at home in East Farmingdale, NY. Devoted partner of 37 years to Patricia Pennecke. Loving stepfather of Linda Gleixner (Craig) of Lindenhurst, Mark Pennecke (Sandy) of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Matthew Pennecke of East Farmingdale. Adored grandfather of Alex & Carley Pennecke, and Vicki Gleixner. He is also survived by his two daughters Elisabeth “Lisa” & Courtney Whitty. Predeceased by his parents, Eleanor Mary (nee Weddell) and James F. Whitty, his younger brother Kenneth, and his son James "Jamie" Whitty. Don departed from this world embraced in Pat and Matt's loving arms. And it was his stepson, Matt, who provided him with unequaled care up until his very last breath. Don's early years included lifeguarding that led to a fitness-focused life of swimming and weightlifting. A proud Air Force veteran, he served during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan where he learned to speak conversational Japanese and embraced martial arts. Rising to the rank of staff sergeant, he received a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Honorable Discharge upon completion of his four-year commitment in 1956 in defense of the country. He went on to work as a draftsman/job shopper for Grumman and Fairchild showcasing his meticulous creative talent. In 1985, destiny brought him and the love of his life, Pat together. Prior to the pandemic Pat and he were regulars at Tanner Park and Farmingdale Public Library where they enjoyed fellowship, countless friendships, and dancing. In fact, Don was always one of the few men out on the dance floor with the ladies waiting their turn. Later in life he enjoyed gardening, reading, watching classic movies, and coloring beautiful elaborate drawings – always with his darling, Patricia, whom he affectionately called “Ollie,” by his side. A thoughtful, friendly, compassionate, and generous man any charitable organization that made its way to his mailbox received a donation in return. The patriarch of our family has left us and we will miss him for the remainder of our days. But we will continue to make him proud as he watches over us from heaven. Rest in paradise our beloved Don/Donnie/Grampa Don/Pops. The family will receive visitors Sunday, February 6th, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc., 315 Conklin Street, Farmingdale. Funeral Mass Monday, February 7th, 10 am, at St. Kilian RC Church, Farmingdale. Memorial donations may be made in Don’s name to a charity of your choice pertaining to the ongoing fight against cancer.
