George Leonard Ampela, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, in the comfort of his own home. Born on December 3, 1939, to parents John and Genevieve Ampela, George lived a full and generous life defined by devotion to family, hard work, and a joyful appreciation for the world around him.
He was the loving father of Michael Ampela (Carole Kerzic), Lorraine Ampela, John Ampela (Alicia Nti), and Ray Ampela (Lucy Schaeffer-Ampela), and the cherished grandfather of Alexa Rosemarie Ampela. His family was his greatest pride, and he treasured every moment spent with them. Known for his warm sense of humor and kind spirit, George brought light and laughter wherever he went and impacted so many lives with his generosity and gentle wisdom.
For 36 years, George served as a specialist clerk at the New York Stock Exchange, where he was respected for his dedication and professionalism. Outside of work, he embraced life with a deep love of nature. He enjoyed camping, boating, and fishing, and was an avid golfer. A true sports enthusiast, he played ice hockey, softball, and soccer—and generously shared his passion by coaching as well.
George was also a gifted musician. He loved singing the songs of John Denver, Neil Diamond, and Simon and Garfunkel, and could often be found playing the guitar, keyboard, or harmonica. Music brought him joy, and he shared that joy freely with others. Whether performing for family or simply singing around the house, his heart longed for the old days, and the melodies he cherished became part of the memories he leaves behind.
A man of steadfast faith, George prayed daily, always giving thanks to God for the blessings in his life.
A funeral mass will be held at Saint Rose of Lima R.C. Church, located at 2 Bayview Ave, Massapequa, NY 11758, on December 5, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Entombment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735, from 11:45 am to 12:15 pm.
