Born on March 29, 1932 in Oak Hill, WV. She was the daughter of the late Jack Miller and Sue Smith Miller.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John T. Dickerson; their infant son, William Anderson Dickerson; her stepmother, Orene Miller; grandson, Matthew Conley; and her step-brother, Charlie Bill Persinger.
Joan was a 1949 graduate of Fayetteville High School. A member of Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, a member and former officer of Fayetteville Women’s Club, a member and former officer of UDC Chapter Southern Cross 2001, and the ANGEL Support Group. She was secretary of Fayetteville High School for 29 years.
Joan was a long time member of the FHS Alumni Association. She was honored to receive the FHS Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award and Alumni of the year Award in 2022 for her dedication to FHS, the alumni and her community. It was because of Joan’s hard work that the Alumni started giving scholarships to deserving FHS students, and now surrounding area students.
Joan’s husband lovingly teased that her middle name was “GO”, and she certainly lived up to it, with trips to all FHS sporting events, WVU games and the occasional Bowl Games. Her favorite colors truly were “green and white” and “blue and gold”. She also enjoyed the many family beach trips, cruises to the eastern and western Caribbean, and her annual antiquing trip to Virginia every October, just to name a few. Nothing gave her more enjoyment than the times she spent with her family, the whole family, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, great-great grandkids, along with friends and other loved ones all under one roof, she relished in the noise, laughter and sheer chaos!!
John and Joan were blessed with nine children: Tom (Teresa), Mike (Donna), Jerry, Jack, Doug (Larry Stowers) “her other son as she called him”, Becky, all of Fayetteville, Ron (Barb) of Hurricane, WV, and Joan Dale Ryder (Ralph Hendrickson) of Christiansburg, VA; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and her best friend and partner in “crime”, Rida White.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Debbie Richardson, Lorrie Lewis, Ryan Alton, Frances Bragg, and Barbara Astuto for all their love and support, and especially the Bowers Hospice House.
The family is encouraging everyone to remember mom by wearing her favorite colors, FHS Green and White, or WVU Blue and Gold
