Gilbert Leroy Best, 95, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful servant of the Lord, and proud veteran, Gilbert lived a life marked by integrity, service, and unwavering faith.
Born on January 14, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, Gilbert was the cherished son of Mac and Iris Springer Best. From a young age, he embodied the principles that would guide him throughout his life: honor, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility to others.
Gilbert answered the call to serve his country with pride, enlisting in the United States Air Force where he held the rank of Airman Second Class. As a member of the 465th Air Police Squadron, he earned both the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, a testament to his steadfast commitment and exemplary service. Following his honorable discharge, Gilbert continued his path of public service as a Lieutenant with the New York City Port Authority Police.
In 1979, Gilbert and his beloved wife Estelle moved from Springfield Gardens, New York, to Palm Coast, Florida. They became active members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where they served on the Altar Guild and as ushers, always seeking ways to give back to their faith community. A man guided by strong convictions, Gilbert was known to say, “Do the right thing—there is no gray area.” His moral compass never wavered.
He delighted in the simple joys of life—time spent with family and friends, lively conversations, and shared laughter. He loved the excitement of the Final Four, the sweet taste of his daughter’s homemade cheesecake, the flavor of coconut shrimp, and the rhythm of jazz music that stirred his soul. Above all, he found purpose in giving back—offering his time, his wisdom, and his kindness to others.
Gilbert was preceded in death by Estelle, his beloved wife of 67 years, who passed away in 2019. Together, they built a life grounded in love, respect, and faith—a legacy that continues through their children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Keith Best of Argyle, TX; his daughter, Brenda (Terry) Boyd of Plymouth, MI; and three beloved grandchildren: Stacia Zellner, Terrance Boyd, and Nicholas (Brittney) Boyd—all of Michigan. His memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew him and were touched by his strength, humility, and grace.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home in Flagler Beach. A Funeral Mass celebrating Gilbert’s life will take place on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Palm Coast. Inurnment will follow at Volusia Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness or service in Gilbert’s memory—small reminders of his lifelong belief in giving back.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” —Matthew 25:23
