Gertrude was born April 28, 1934, in Flint, Michigan to the late Thomas and Ethel (Cotterman) Johnson. She was the oldest of 10 children and gladly stepped into the role of helping to care for her younger siblings following her mother's passing. For 30 years, she was a dedicated nurse at Hurley Hospital and was also involved in the nurse's union. Gertrude loved to go camping, swimming and playing cards. She was a very patriotic lady, and also loved to sing. Gertrude enjoyed cooking and according to her family was quite good at it too. She was a "fun-loving person" and had a great sense of humor, and she brought so many joyous memories to her family. Gertrude cherished her family, especially her grandchildren, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
Gertrude leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving sons Jerry Jr. and Jeffrey; loving stepdaughter Leeann; cherished grandchildren Chloe, Jeffrey and Jane; one precious great grandchild; dear siblings Thomas (Kay), Janet, Tim, Debbie (Dan), Margaret, Ellen and Luke (Candy); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gertrude is preceded in death by her beloved husband Jerry Newman Sr., son Joel, sister Barbara, brother Jack and her parents.
