Carolyn F. Weil passed away peacefully on January 8, 2019, on the eve of her 94th birthday. Beloved mother of Elizabeth Demirjian and Millicent Garofalo. Adored mother- in-law of Fred and Michael. Cherished grandmother of Roderick, Haley, Emily, Scott and Nicholas.
Carolyn was born in Mullins, South Carolina. She received a Bachelor of Science from Winthrop College in 1946. When Carolyn was 27 she moved to New York to attend graduate school at Columbia University where she graduated with a Master of Science in Library Science in 1954. During her time in graduate school Carolyn began working at the New York Public Library. Carolyn continued to work at different branches of the New York Public Library as a librarian/reference librarian for the next ten years. In 1953 Carolyn met her future husband, Jean Weil (in the library) and they were married at Riverside Church on November 25, 1955. Carolyn and Jean settled down and started a family in Queens, New York. It was there that they became parents to two daughters and proud grandparents of five wonderful grandchildren. Carolyn’s grandchildren were her pride and joy and they were instrumental in keeping her young. Carolyn resumed working at the New York Public Library in her later years. She retired in 1987 but continued to be an avid reader throughout her entire life.
Carolyn has been a role model to her daughters as well as her grandchildren. Her decision to pursue her dreams and leave the small town in South Carolina to head to New York was not an easy one and was very unusual for the time period. She was ahead of her time! She had a successful career that she enjoyed, which is not something many people can say. Carolyn loved learning, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She embraced her sons-in-law and treated them both as the sons she never had. She will always be remembered as one of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle women you could ever meet. Although she lived in New York for 66 years, she never lost her southern accent. It was part of her charm. She will be terribly missed but will remain in our hearts forever.
Visiting hours Friday from 2-5 & 7-9pm. Church services are pending for Saturday. Interment at Flushing Cemetery
