Fanny Ruggieri, born Fanny Scalero to Raymond and Virginia Scalero, died peacefully the morning of July 23rd, 2025. She was the youngest of eleven children and grew up in Brooklyn. There are no words to capture Fanny’s presence, simply put, the world lost a light so Heaven could gain it.
She was a hairdresser by trade before marrying August Ruggieri, who she met while summering on the beach with friends. She then became a mother to two daughters, Helene and Laraine, dedicating her life to motherhood. She was the kind of mom who accompanied her children to school, took part in the PTA, and walked by the park to make sure everyone was okay. She was ready to pick up the phone at a moment’s notice and could chat forever.
She later became a doting grandmother of three, helping out whenever needed and leaving her grandchildren with joyous memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. She never failed to have ice cream from Baskin Robbins waiting for them, letting them take over her television to watch Disney Channel. She never drove, but she always found a way to get to them if they couldn’t get to her.
Not much for flying, she loved cruises, but she also took adventures by reading books late into the night and watching movies starring Clark Gable and Cary Grant. She spent much of her later life socializing with anyone she met, often becoming the mayor wherever she went, especially at the Dunkin Donuts in Corona Park and the pastry shop in Forest Hills. She was truly a riot and loved by all. She was always a trooper, especially after suffering a life altering stroke at 78. She lived out her days at the Grand Rehabilitation Center where she was loved by all and known as “Queen of the Grand.”
Fanny leaves behind her daughters, a son-in law who she absolutely adored, three grandchildren, and a grand-dog, Bosco. Her family is comforted knowing she is out of pain and greeted by loved ones and friends who were called home before her, including her husband August.
