Haldis Kjellaug Lykken Buchakian – known to most as “Kay” and affectionately called “Vesla” by her family in Norway - passed away on July 4, 2025, in Flushing, New York, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and positivity.
Born in Valdres, Norway, on October 15, 1936, to loving parents Embrik Lykken and Olga Munkelien Lykken, Kay grew up in the idyllic town of Dokka surrounded by family.
Kay emigrated to the United States at age 21, beginning her American journey in Chicago. In 1960, she became a flight attendant with PanAm and settled in Queens, New York, where she met and married Peter Buchakian.
Fiercely independent and always full of optimism, Kay lived each day with energy, curiosity, and joy. She was an avid reader, constantly consuming mystery novels and The New York Times - she particularly enjoyed doing the Sunday crossword puzzle. Evenings were for a good glass of wine and watching Jeopardy!, where she’d regularly call out the answers before the contestants could buzz in.
Kay took tremendous pride in her home on 167th Street, which she lovingly filled with art, books, plants, and the comforting smells of home-cooked meals. Every corner reflected her warmth, style, and care - a sanctuary for family and friends, and a place that radiated her love and personality.
She was a woman of many talents and passions: an avid painter, loving gardener, skilled knitter, and exceptional cook and baker. Her home was always filled with beauty, creativity, and delicious food.
A longtime member of Church on the Hill since 1966, Kay found faith, fellowship, and many lasting friendships. She devoted much of her time there volunteering for her community.
She is survived by her sister, Kari Lykken; her daughter, Karen Phillips and her husband Robert; her son, Erik, and his wife Carolyn Crosen; and her beloved grandchildren, Thor and Devon. She also leaves behind many dear cousins and friends in both Norway and the United States, all of whom will remember her generous heart, sharp wit, and positive outlook.
Kay found joy in life’s simple pleasures - being “bestemor” to her grandchildren, her plants, her cats Louis and Dizzy, her crossword and black coffee, her wine and Jeopardy!, and above all, the home and garden she built with love.
Kay lived with grace, humor, and boundless heart. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to support North Shore Animal League America in Kay's honor.
A Memorial Service will be held at Church on the Hill on July 24th at 1 pm.
