Mirko Lekić, beloved husband, father, deda, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 23rd, 2024, at the age of 73. Born in Sarajevo in 1951, Mirko’s life was a journey of resilience, dedication, and profound joy in the people around him. In 1994, amidst the turmoil of war, Mirko moved to New York to help build a brighter future for his family.
Mirko’s life was as diverse as it was vibrant. In Sarajevo, he was many things—a soccer player, a journalist, a civil servant, and civil defense chief during some of the darkest days for his beloved hometown. Each role he embraced reflected his deep commitment to serving his community. In New York, Mirko worked tirelessly, balancing multiple jobs to secure a better life for his family, taking great pride in their accomplishments, and embodying the strength and determination that defined his character.
Wherever he went, Mirko had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, often recalling even the smallest details about them years later. Known for his warm personality and natural charm, he made friends effortlessly—from the raja of Sarajevo to the patrons of the Bryant Library. Mirko found joy in the small pleasures of life, had a sharp eye for fashion, and a genuine appreciation for art, which he expressed through painting in his later years.
Mirko leaves behind a legacy of friendliness, resilience, and love for his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. He is survived by his wife Biserka, children Mirna and Vedran, and granddaughter Iris. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who knew him.
A visitation for Mirko will be held Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. A graveside service will occur Monday, October 28, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Flushing Cemetery, 163-6 46th Ave, New York, NY 11358.
