Dennis “Danny” Strom was the embodiment of the American Dream. Born in 1925 to immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up with his older sister Ruth in the East New York neighborhood where he attended public schools and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He was in Patton’s Army in World War II, and then went to Pace College (now University) on the G.I. Bill, where he studied accounting. He then graduated from Brooklyn Law School, starting out as a night student while working full-time.
While working as an accountant, he accepted a job as the comptroller for one of his clients, Bakers Franchise Corp. He then embarked on a forty-year career in the bread business, ultimately becoming President of the company. His most significant accomplishment was convincing independent bakeries across the country that they could turn a profit selling kosher bread in supermarkets. When he was in his sixties, the baking industry had changed and his business went through bankruptcy. He then started a second career helping people navigate personal bankruptcies.
One of his trademarks, was his series of lightly used Cadillacs. He would buy a low mileage Cadillac, keep it for three years or so, and then exchange it for a newer model. He often seemed happiest behind the wheel of his car, and he was always ready to offer a ride to friends or family. Against everyone’s better judgment he continued driving in Manhattan’s busy streets past his 98th birthday.
He will be remembered by his family as a devoted husband, a father who offered his children unconditional love, a warm and welcoming father-in-law, a beloved uncle and great uncle, and a proud grandfather.
A funeral service for Dennis will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels, 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Wellwood Cemetery, 1400 Wellwood Ave, West Babylon, NY 11704.
