Gayle was born on September 2, 1955 to Benson and Evelyn Stone. She was raised in Flushing, Queens with her brother Lonny. Gayle grew up in the company of her many cousins, aunts and uncles. She maintained a very close and special relationship with her Aunt Sandy. Summers were spent at the family retreat and home of her Poppy Abe in South Fallsburg, NY. As an adult, Gayle’s family was her life. After dating for five years, Gayle and Charlie were married in August of 1988. They were soulmates and best friends for 41 years building a life of love, devotion, and respect for one another until the end. She was a wonderful and special mother to Rebecca and Robin. They were her best friends. Each embodies her essence as loving, caring and attentive mothers to their children.
Gayle’s professional passion was education. Generations of students were touched by her experience, patience and devotion to their needs. In her retirement Gayle enjoyed the company of her many dear friends, taking art classes, going to movies, shows and restaurants. She loved working in her backyard garden and walking in the woods with Charlie and their dog, Maggie.
Gayle loved traveling and seeing what the world was like outside of New York. There were many family vacations to locations around the world. Sadly her expeditions were cut short by her illness and the global pandemic. Gayle was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in February of 2020 and the world shut down that March. She spent the next four years battling the disease and enjoying her remaining days, reveling in life’s unfolding. She saw both daughters get married. She watched out the window as Rebecca and Jonathan were married in the backyard. Robin and Joey surprised Gayle by arranging their wedding in secret. There was an intimate wedding and party at Robin’s favorite Long Island City restaurant on the waterfront.
Gayle’s lifelong dream of grandchildren was realized with the birth of Emilia, Layla and Benjamin. The babies brought her a sense of peace and contentment which were vital elements to her life during her extended illness. Gayle’s only regret at the end was not being there to see them grow up.
Gayle passed away in her sleep with Charlie at her side. She is finally at peace and reunited with her parents and brother.
