I was very sad to hear that Ilsa had passed away.  We were colleagues who collaborated on many scientific studies of the inner ear, and good friends as well.  During the time that we worked together I traveled from San Diego to UCLA often, and when our work ended late I would have dinner with Ilsa and Alan at their home to miss the traffic on the way back.  She taught me how to make risotto, which I still make often, and I always think of her when stirring the pot.  While I hadn't seen her in some years since she stopped attending scientific meetings, I will miss the updates that always came with her holiday cards.

Today I was deeply saddened to learn of Ilsa’s passing in late September. She was a dear friend and colleague. We exchanged annual family letters until a few years ago and before Ilsa retired we would always get together at ARO or SFN. She was a fine scientist working on the auditory brainstem with many significant contributions. She was the second women president of ARO and chaired different committees for the NIH.  I fondly remember being invited to UCLA then to Alan and Ilsa’s home when they were still in SoCal. Ilsa was a special bright light and I am sure she will be greatly missed by her wonderful family which was so important to her. My deepest sympathies and thoughts are with you.   

We are so sorry to learn that Ilsa Schwartz had passed away. We were just thinking of her recently when we were celebrating an era when we were so rich in NIH awards.
