Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Joel Slutsky, of Durham, NC, passed away at his home on December 25, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 76. Larry was the elder of two sons born to Isidore and Bernice Slutsky on May 29, 1946, in Brooklyn, NY, and grew up in Bayside, NY. Following his graduation from Francis Lewis High School in 1964, Larry went on to study history at Trinity College in Hartford, CT and graduated with honors in 1968. From there, he attended Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P & S) and graduated in 1972 and completed his residency in radiology at New York University in 1976. As an alum, Larry remained an ardent supporter of both Trinity and Columbia. He was a leader in annual giving, established scholarships and endowments, and served as a class reunion chair for his classes at both schools. It was at Columbia that Larry met his devoted wife of 50 years, Dr. Helen Reiner Slutsky, and they were married June 10, 1972. As a young couple, following several moves, they ultimately settled in Wichita, Kansas in 1979, where they raised a family and lived for 37 years before relocating to Durham in 2016 to be closer to their two grandchildren. Larry was a highly respected radiologist who approached his work with exacting precision and perfection, as well as his signature sarcastic wit and dry humor. He was a partner in Consultants in Radiology at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita for 32 years. He and Helen were also very involved in growing and sustaining Wichita’s small Jewish community. He was an avid New York Mets fan, and in his free time, he could be found exercising, listening to music, or traveling with his family. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Isidore and Bernice Slutsky. He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters Jessica Macari and Erica Slutsky; grandchildren Layla and Eli Macari; and brother Richard Slutsky. Services will be held on December 30, 2022 at 12:00 pm at Sinai Chapels in Forest Hills, NY. The service will immediately be followed by interment at Old Montefiore Cemetery in Springfield Gardens, NY. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or the charity of your choice.
